Twin Cities home and garden tours, shows during next 12 months ...

Artful Garden Tour

It's that time of year to hunker down and maybe even get back to those home projects you've been putting off all summer. Luckily, there are plenty of places to look for inspiration.

Almost two-dozen home, garden and cabin tours are held throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin every year. In addition to offering home improvement ideas, plenty of events offer interior design inspiration, thanks to more than a dozen home-decorating tours and art festivals.

If you're trying to decide what events are best for you, we've helped you break it down with this guide of tours and festivals coming up in the next year.

HOMES BY ARCHITECTS TOUR

In its fifth year, this upcoming tour will feature at least 16 new and remodeled homes designed to fit a variety of budgets throughout the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Members of the American Institute of Architects Minnesota designed the homes spotlighted in the tour.

LAKE HOME & CABIN SHOW

MIDWEST HOME LUXURY HOME TOUR

No more driving past those multimillion-dollar estates and wondering what they look like inside. In custom homes from Afton to Orono, the annual tour opens the doors to eight luxury homes in the region, some equipped with indoor sports courts, chef's kitchens and more.

MIDWEST HOME SHOW

There's plenty to see and do at this get-together showcasing the latest home-improvement and decorating trends. More than 200 local contractors, landscapers and designers will be on hand for the event featuring gardens, furniture design, remodeling and green-living ideas. Cooking demos and a flea market are also part of the activities.

PARADE OF HOMES

In its 64th year, Parade of Homes is considered the largest and longest-running new homes tour in the country. This year's Fall Showcase features nearly 300 new homes, ranging from starter homes to multimillion-dollar mansions. This year's highlights include three million-dollar "Dream Homes" that are MN Green Path certified. The remodeler's showcase is in its 25th year and features almost 90 homes, including a "Dream Remodeled Home."

MINNESOTA HOME & PATIO SHOW

With more than 500 experts and exhibitors from across the country, this four-day event is one of the largest home-improvement expositions in the nation. Home improvement and landscape ideas, seminars and demonstrations on some of the latest products and services are part of the lineup.

SUMMIT HILL HOUSE TOUR

Held every two years, the event gives visitors a chance to peek inside 15 historic homes and public spaces. This year's tour includes homes on Heather Place, Clarence Johnston-designed homes and the University Club. Free shuttles are available. Warners' Stellian hosts this self-guided tour with proceeds benefiting the Summit Hill Association.

COMMUNITY GARDEN DAY

Garden parties all around. This self-guided tour organized by the nonprofit Gardening Matters keeps getting bigger. During the next tour, more than 450 community garden open houses will be held across the state. Look for food, music, presentations and other activities along the way.

COMMUNITY GARDEN SPRING RESOURCE FAIR

MINNESOTA DOME HOME TOUR

These days, domes are not only lauded for their design, but also for their energy efficiency. Meant to inspire green living, the self-guided tour includes the award-winning Bear Creek Dome in North Branch, Minn.

MINNESOTA SOLAR TOUR

There's something new brewing for this year's solar event: an "after tour" party at Barley John's Brewpub in New Brighton. But first, partake in the self-guided tour featuring homes and businesses throughout the state that use renewable energy in their design and function. The bicycle tour in Minneapolis also returns (bring your own wheels or rent a Nice Ride bike).

ART-A-WHIRL

More than 500 artists open their studios and galleries in North Minneapolis. The annual open house includes art demonstrations, food events and live music stages.

ART ATTACK

Every fall, the multi-level Northrup King Building opens the doors to its galleries and studios for the public to see and buy original art. Sculptures, paintings, jewelry and other works by more than 200 artists are part of the event.

ART CRAWL: WHERE ART MEETS 50TH & FRANCE

ART ON MAIN

ASID MN SHOWCASE HOME TOUR

From kitchens to dining areas and bedrooms to bathrooms, the American Society of Interior Designers selects a home each year and brings in a team of designers and craftsmen for a redesign and remodel. The makeover is unveiled to the public in a monthlong series of tours and events. Proceeds from the tour benefit ASID MN and participating nonprofits.

BACHMAN'S IDEAS HOUSE

Three times a year, Bachman's takes a former two-story home on its Lyndale Avenue campus and offers seasonal, do-it-yourself decorating ideas for everything from the sunroom to the master suite. The self-guided fall tour even includes a room for Fido with the latest in doggy furniture and decor.

EDINA ART FAIR

This annual festival is ranked among the top 100 best art shows in the country by trade publications. In its 47th year, the get-together offers works by the more than 340 artists from across the United States and Canada. New features this year include a Community Art Project, kids activities, strolling entertainers and music. Free shuttle service provided between the fair and Southdale Center.

FALL COLORS FINE ART & JAZZ

FESTIVAL

Shop while enjoying views of the scenic St. Croix River adorned in autumn foliage. This popular annual get-together features everything from glass and metal work to jewelry and fiber art. Live music and food are also a draw.

FALL FINE ARTS SHOW

This year, the Fall Fine Arts exhibit moves from the Grain Belt Bottling House to the newly renovated Solar Arts Building. The showcase features more than 130 NEMAA artist members offering up their paintings, photography, sculpture, mixed-media art and other works for purchase.

LORING PARK ART FESTIVAL

Loring Park Art Festival's debut in 2000 drew approximately 6,000 people with about 100 artists participating. Now, more than 30,000 folks visit the two-day event to check out items by 140 artists. The event runs the same weekend as the popular Uptown Art Fair and the Powderhorn Park Art Fair.

NORTH OAKS HOLIDAY HOME TOUR, BOUTIQUE & LUNCHEON

Here's a chance to view the latest trends in holiday decorating as well as take in food and entertainment ideas. Every year, designers decorate a traditional and contemporary home for the public tour. New this year is the addition of a third home. A luncheon at the North Oaks Golf Club is also available for an additional fee. Proceeds benefit Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

POWDERHORN PARK ART FAIR

Considered one of the best-juried regional art fairs in the country, the Powderhorn fair is two decades old and runs the same weekend as the popular Uptown Art Fair and Loring Park Art Festival. More than 180 artists are invited to set up their exhibits in the 66-acre city park. The family-friendly event also boasts children's activities, theater, music and other performances.

ST. ANTHONY PARK ARTS FESTIVAL

The St. Anthony Park neighborhood has been hosting a festival to benefit the St. Paul Branch Library's summer reading and activity programs for children for 43 years. Artists will sell pottery, paintings, jewelry, clothing and more. There will also be a plant and used-book sale.

ST. PAUL ART CRAWL

Two times a year, the public is invited to check out the studios and galleries inside all those lofts in Lowertown, downtown and St. Paul neighborhoods. The St. Paul Art Collective puts together this showcase with hundreds of artists featuring crafts, pottery, textiles, jewelry, photography and other artwork.

UPTOWN ART FAIR

Ranked Minnesota's best art fair in the Harris Guide, the 2013 event will mark the gathering's 50th year. This popular event runs the same weekend as the Powderhorn Park Art Fair and Loring Park Art Festival

ARBORETUM AUXILIARY PRIVATE GARDEN TOURS

MACY'S AND BACHMAN'S SPRING FLOWER SHOW
